Colin Cushnie, Jim Davies and Neil Redpath went off to climb Kilimanjaro and they all successfully reached the summit on 23rd October 2011.

Congratulations to them.

Neil says: "It was a trip of a lifetime. We found it tough going on the summit night, with the affects of high altitude, but we had some great experiences with a wonderful crew, which all of our group of seven had "maximum respect" for."

George and Dave Compleat

The latest club members to "compleat" their munros are George Walkingshaw and Dave Lawson. George and Dave's last munro was Ben More on Mull. They climbed this with 6 other members of the club, who were all attending the Mull Club Weekend, on the 23rd July 2011.

George and Dave were presented with their quaich's at the August 2011 club meeting.

The Great Outdoors Challenge

Janice Thomson and Virginia Kearse completed the Coast to coast backpacking trek in 13 days arriving at Stonehaven on 26th May 2011.

Summer having already happened in April, they enjoyed the heaviest recorded rainfall in the UK in the first few days from Glen Shiel to Glen Affric with resulting epic river crossings; fresh snow down to 500 metres on 20th May as they headed into the Cairngorms and galeforce winds on 23rd May. All in all a memorable trip.

Janice would like to thank everyone for their sponsorship. "Vision Africa-Give a Child a Future" is a charity which cares for and advances the education of orphaned children in Nairobi, Kenya. The magnificent sum of £608 was raised with the help of club members and this is 'ring- fenced' and will go towards 11 year old Mary's secondary education.

Skye Compleatists

3 members of Glenrothes Hillwalkers Club compleated all 12 of their Skye munros at the recent Club Weekend on the island. Over the duration of the weekend, in June 2011, members of the club ascended every munro on Skye.

Photo Gallery

The Photo Gallery was hosted on an external site called Fotopic.net. On the 9th of March 2011 the entire Fotopic site went down without any warning. We can only assume that Fotopic has gone out of business as its site has never reappeared.

There is now a new Photo Gallery up and running, with some of my own photos (for demonstration purposes). The contents of the old Photo Gallery are gone. However it would have been far too big a job to transfer the contents over to a new Photo Gallery. In any case I have noticed previously that it is usually only the recent photos which are viewed.

We (or I should say Dave Lawson) will be uploading photos to the new Gallery. So please email your photos as usual. Please ensure any photos you do email are reduced to 640 pixels as it makes it a lot easier for Dave to upload them to the Gallery.

Appologies for any inconvenience caused

The End Of An Era

The Glenrothes Hillwalkers AGM on 1st March 2011 marked the end of an era. David McCracken and Janice Thomson stepped down from the committee after many years service to the club. David had served on the committee for 15 years and had held various offices (Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary). Janice had served for more years than she will admit to and had also held various offices (Chairperson, Vice Chair, Training & Safety).

Donation to Dundonnell Mountain Rescue

During the club weekend at Sail Mhor Croft at Dundonnell, we presented a cheque for £628 to Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team.

Club Vice Chairperson, Janice Thomson said the club's members wanted to show their appreciation of the work carried out by the Team. "Mountain Rescue team members volunteer their time and skills to help those in difficulty in the hills. The teams are not only involved in helping with accidents but they also support outdoor events which might not be able to take place without the advice and assistance of the Mountain Rescue teams."

"The Club raises funds through an annual ceilidh, silent auction, food hamper raffle and navigation classes so that a donation can be made every year to Mountain Rescue," she added.
